Birmingham Airport (BHX) operates from one terminal; all lounges including business, shops, amenities and security are at one central location. Offering domestic and International flight; and handling 8,572,398 million passengers in 2008, makes it the seventh busiest airport in the UK. Birmingham Airport (BHX) recommends that passengers arrive at least 90minutes before departure to pass through security. The busiest periods at the airport are 0600-0730 in peak season, July August and September. Check in can be done on line before arrival or at the self-service kiosks available. Throughout the terminal there is free Wi-Fi and a multi faith prayer room.
In 1939 Birmingham Airport (BHX) began as Elmdon Airport (opened by the Duchess of Kent), owned and operated by the Birmingham City Council, for domestic flights. During World War Two it was used by the RAF as a military base and the Royal Navy as a flying school. In the 1960's control was resumed by the Council and an additional terminal was built called the International Building. This allowed for services such as the VC-10 to New York. In 1984 a new terminal was built and that is what you can be seen today. In 1986 the ownership of the airport transferred to the West Midlands Joint Airport Committee, which combines seven district councils. In 1996 a second terminal called the Eurohub was developed for the use of British Airways. However, in March 2000 the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh opened a redesigned version of the airport operating from one terminal.
