London Heathrow Airport - A Brief History
The original plot of land we touch down and take off from everyday at London Heathrow Airport started out as 150 acre plot, bought by Richard Fairey off a Vicar for £15,000, this is where Heathrow Airport began. The land was originally bought so that Richard Fairey could assemble and test aircrafts. During WW2 this patch of land as well as a large amount of the surrounding area of the old town of "Heath Row" was requisitioned by the government to construct RAF Heston, a base for long-range troop-carrying aircraft bound for the Far East. This started in 1944, but by the time the war had ended the RAF no longer needed this land and it was officially handed over to the Air Ministry as London's new civil airport on 1 January 1946. By the time London Heathrow Airport had finished its first year in operation over 63,000 people had passed through the gates. This figure raised significantly over the years, and is still rising today!
Expansion of London Heathrow Airport's Terminals
Who would have thought that the dream of one person with a passion for building and testing aircraft would turn into the creation of the UK's most busiest airport with over 180 destinations in over 90 different countries. By 1961 the old terminal on the northside had closed and airlines either operated from the Europa terminal (later renamed Heathrow Airport's Terminal 2) or the Oceanic terminal (now Heathrow Airport's Terminal 3). In 1969 Heathrow Airport's Terminal 1 was opened followed by the launch of the Concorde in the 1970's, and the last 3 concordes made their final touch down in London Heathrow Airport in 2003. Due to the large amount of frequent air travellers now passing through Heathrow Airport's magical gates the 3 teminals couldn't keep up with demand so Heathrow Airport's Terminal 4 was opened in 1986.
London Heathrow Airport; World's Busiest International Airport
Today London Heathrow Airport is the world's busiest international airport, over 67 million passengers travel through the airport annually on services offered by 90 airlines travelling to over 180 destinations in over 90 countries.By the time London Heathrow Airport celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2006 it had handled around 1.4 billion passengers on over 14 million flights. The start of operations at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 in March 2008 marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Heathrow. Future developments include the construction of Terminal 2A to replace Terminals 1 and 2 and the redevelopment of Heathrow Airport's Terminals 3 and 4. London Heathrow Airport has become so popular for everyone that the amount of things to do in the airport could keep you entertained for hours! The time between your check in and your departure will surely fly by. Giving you and your family the perfect start to your family vacation. At first London Heathrow Airport was simply called London Airport, but in 1966 London Airport was renamed London Heathrow Airport we all know today. Over the years London Heathrow Airport's popularity has greatly increased due to it being easily accessed; the London Underground Link was opened in 1977 and in 1998 The Heathrow Express rail service was launched.
