New Winter Weather Plan for Heathrow

Heathrow Airport has published its Winter Resilience Programme Update which is aimed at highlighting the steps taken and work implemented by the airport to improve Heathrow’s ability to cope with extreme winter conditions. This comes after December 2010 saw heavy snow fall which caused the delay and cancellation of thousands of flights at the Airport.

The work is targeting three main areas:

  • Snow Planning and Preparation
  • Crisis Management Command and Control
  • Passenger Welfare and Information

The airport has committed £32.4 million to the project which will see the total number of staff contributing to the removal of snow to 468, some of the additional staff will have the role of ensuring more accurate information is given to passengers as early as possible.

The number of designated snow removal vehicles will be tripled to increase the size of the fleet available at any given time to 185. The paper states that the main priority during periods of heavy snow and extreme winter conditions will be passenger’s interests.
