London Heathrow

London’s Heathrow Airport is the world’s busiest airport with thousands of people using it’s car services every day. In fact this enormous, busy airport transports more than 67 million passengers through it’s gates every year! Ninety different airlines fly passengers to over 180 destinations from this major world route hub. Since opening after the second World War when in 2006 London Heathrow Airport celebrated its 60th anniversary it had been used by 1.4 billion passengers and over 14 million flights and used the famous Heathrow runways.

Heathrow Terminals have grown over the years and until recently there were four terminals, Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 4 but after much public consultation and an extensive archaeological survey, work started in 2002 on a new Terminal 5 building. The impressive main terminal building once finished became the largest free standing building in the U.K. The terminal finally began operations in March 2008 and it marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Heathrow Airport.

Transport between Heathrow and the Capital itself is via the M4 motorway or A-roads and takes about 50 minutes to cover the 15 mile (23 KM) route to Central London, while the London Underground train service which opened in 1977 connects with very frequent trains every few minutes and takes about 45 minutes. In 1998 The Heathrow Express rail service was launched cutting the journey time down to about 21 minutes (depending on which Terminal), and running every 15 minutes.
