The annual passenger movement survey by the Civil Aviation Authority has been published for 2010, based on interviews with 200,000 departing passengers and it found Heathrow Airport remains the bggest UK transfer hub.
The travellers were questioned about their travel habits as they passed through the main London airports of Heathrow itself, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and London City as well as a number of regional airports – Birmingham, Doncaster, Manchester and East Midlands, Humberside, Leeds Bradford and Liverpool.
The study found that 36% of passengers were using the airport to making joining flights, the highest percentage of all the airports in the study and confirming it’s place as a regional hub. also from the survey we can see that nearly 60% of the travellers were non-UK residents.
In terms of business vs leisure travel 63% of the travellers through Heathrow were on business, marking an increase from previous years despite the Uk and European recessionary environment.
By contrast for example, Doncaster airport reported 97% leisure travel, marking the wide variences in types of usage around the UK’s airports. For the full study see: http://www.caa.co.uk/application.aspx?catid=14&pagetype=65&appid=7&newstype=n&mode=detail&nid=2063
