Edinburgh Airport History

Starting off as an Aerodrome during World War One, Edinburgh had just a grass strip for a runway and aeroplanes that arrives in packages to be assembled. In 1915, the Aerodrome was converted into RAF Turnhouse for the Royal Flying Corps.

The first Edinburgh to London shuttle service began in 1947. RAF Turnhouse was demilitarized and handed over to the Ministry of Aviation. The Edinbugh-London shuttle flight continued to run until 1971 when BAA purchased the Airport.

In 1977, BAA officially opened the site as “Edinburgh Airport”. In 2001 considerable renovations were made to the main terminal building with further expansions proposed for the forthcoming years.

Edinburgh Airport is Scotland’s busiest airport located in Turnhouse, handling 9.4 million passengers in 2011. The airport is owned by BAA, and the International Consortium FGP Top Co Limited. There are plans to expand the airport, with passengers expected to increase to 26 million per annum.

Originally a northerly British Air base used by the Royal Flying Corp, but in 1918 the Royal Air force formed RAF Turnhouse. During the Second World War the airport became under military control until the first commercial service in 1947. British European Airways started services between Edinburgh and London.

The airport recommends that for long haul flights check in is 3hrs, European 2hrs and UK and Ireland 1hr before. Check in can be done on line before arriving at the airport or at the self service kiosks available. After check in there are many shops and restaurants available while you wait to board. Boarding usually takes place 45mins before the flights departure.

Edinburgh Airport is the ideal location when renting a car for a drive holiday. Situated five miles out of Edinburgh, the city is easily accessible, located off the M8 motorway. The historic city is most popular during Hogmanay (New Years Eve), and the Summers Military Tattoo, hosting a line up of musicians, pipers, drummers and dancers. Edinburgh Castle has presided over the city for 1200yrs, creating a stunning setting for any drive holiday. Hire a car and follow the Royal Mile eastwards to the Palace of Holyrood, there are many busking pipers, a variety of shops and restaurants. Renting a car from Easirent, will enable you to visit some of the many museums, such as the new Dynamic Earth Exhibition, the museum of Scotland, the National Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Golfing fanatics worldwide choose Edinburgh to enjoy the many courses available, from the picturesque Musselburgh, or more famously ST Andrews or Muirfield. Edinburgh Airport is also a destination for honeymooners, the East Lothian Coastline just 20 miles out of the city offers beaches such as Gullane, Yellowcraig and John Muir Way, popular with surfers, offers a variety of walks, a natural habitat for much wild life and spectacular sunsets.

St Andrews day is celebrated every year on the 30th November, a feast day in honour of Scotland’s Patron Saint. ‘Visit for free’ is a scheme that offers free entry to many of Edinburgh main attractions, such as Edinburgh Castle. Linlithgow Palace in West Lothian is another historic property well worth a visit; drive 19 miles from the airport to enjoy the magnificent park lands and waters of the loch. Although in ruins it has maintained its charm and elegance see the beautifully carved sculptures. Ceilidhs take place on ST Andrew’s Day, traditional Scottish Dances with live music can be found throughout the city; a great chance to experience the real Scotland.

Visit Edinburgh during the Christmas period to the ancient city look it’s best for the festivities. Edinburgh has become renowned for the annual German Market, the perfect place to buy gifts and keep out the cold with a warming Gluwein (red wine with cinnamon, cloves vanilla and citrus). There are also German snacks available, try many of the sweets and biscuits or a tasty venison burger. Visit Europe’s largest air ice arena located in Princes Street Gardens, or take in the views of Edinburgh from the 100ft tall Ferris wheel. Take advantage many the shops in Princes Street, perfect for Christmas Shopping. A must see of the season is the annual Christmas Concert with St Giles choir in Parliament Square.
