Birmingham Airport calls on the government to impose a “Congestion Charge” on the UK’s main airports London Heathrow and London Gatwick to try fight for a bigger slice of the aviation market. Car Hire Birmingham Airport feel if the charge was to go ahead it may encourage more passengers to use Birmingham Airport rather than the London Airports.
Birmingham Airport put its input to the Government consultation on aviation it also included suggestions to allow airports outside of London to allowed to offer moratorium on Air Passenger Duty to try get more long haul carriers to be interested in flying to the region.
In a statement Paul Kehoe the chief executive at Birmingham Airport said “if the Government is serious about making the best use of existing capacity at UK airports, it need to balance capacity restrictions on airports in the South East with policies that encourage airlines to use other UK airports” Birmingham Airport is going for a “Multi-Hub” setup as opposed to proposals for a “Dual Hub” between London Heathrow Airport and other airports as a alternative to a 3rd runway at London Heathrow Airport
