Birmingham is aiming to increase it’s sporting profile, which Trevor from Car Hire Birmingham Airport thinks will be great for the city, but also great potential for car hire.

A bid to host the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2016 is being made by Birmingham at a cost of £2.5 million. The city council see’s the event as an ideal showcase event for the National Indoor Arena following £22 million refurbishment.

Last hosting the event in 2003, the bid will be submitted by Birmingham and British Athletics, with the winning venue announced in November. The venue selected can expect more than 1,000 athletes and officials from 170 countries, 25,000 spectators and 1,000 media representatives.

If Birmingham was selected it could be worth £20-40 million in economic and media value in raising their profile on the world stage.

Council deputy leader Ian Ward said: “This is an opportunity to bring a major international championships to Birmingham and recreate some of that spirit from the 2012 Olympics, and it will serve to inspire more young people to take part in sport.”
