Cunard’s three Ocean Queens will sail into the River Mersey for a spectacular celebration of the company’s 175th anniversary. The Elizabeth, Mary and Victoria vessels will form the centrepiece of global celebrations for the famous shipping line’s birthday in 2015.
Liverpool – which is the birthplace and spiritual home of Cunard – will join its sister city New York where they have previously gathered for special occasions. The iconic Queen Mary 2 will arrive at the Liverpool cruise terminal on Sunday, May 24, 2015, followed by the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria the following day.
All three ships will assemble in front of the world famous Three Graces at the city’s Pier Head at mid-morning before the QM2 departs first. The three ships will be close to the famous Cunard Building on the Pier Head – Cunard’s headquarters from 1917 to 1967 – for a once-in-a-lifetime event that will make maritime history. The spectacular showpiece is considered to be the jewel in the crown in Cunard’s global celebrations.
When the Queen Elizabeth 2 graced the Mersey in 1990 more than one million ship enthusiasts gathered on the banks of the river to witness her arrival. On that occasion the crowds gave her a warm Liverpool welcome.
