Airports from around UK back Heathrow Expansion

The plans to extend Heathrow to include a third runway are supported and backed by a group of 32 regional airports from around the UK. The group, known as the Regional & Business Airports Group or Raba has written directly to the Transport Secretary, Patrick McLoughlin, to call on the government to support a third runway at the busy West London airport.

The support from this new group means that there are now 37 regional airports in support of the Heathrow campaign. Previous backers of the campaign include Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle, Aberdeen and Leeds Bradford and the Raba Group represents smaller airfields in places such as Exeter and Newquay.

In addition to support for airports and regional airfields, the Airports Commission also recommended that Heathrow should be allowed to expand rather than Gatwick. There are those who disagree though including International Airlines Group whose Chief Executive, Willie Walsh, criticised the forecast costs of the Heathrow plan.

Speaking on behalf of Raba their chairman John Spooner wrote in the letter that they had ‘extensive engagement with both scheme promoters’ meaning both Heathrow and Gatwick and shared the group’s final decision that ‘the expansion of Heathrow airport is the best solution for UK aviation and for UK regional growth.’ He further highlighted that the group believe that Heathrow’s expansion will ‘reverse the decline in domestic connectivity’ and all that remains is for the government to make their final decision, which is believed to come very soon. Either result will mean more convenient opportunity to fly for both business and leisure travellers.
