There has been a pleasing mood with staff at Car Hire Birmingham Airport with the start their local football team has made to the new season.
The reaction from Birmingham City captain Paul Robinson to being overlooked has been praised by his manager. Lee Clark left the 35 year old captain out of the starting team for the Capital One Cup game against Cambridge United.
Clark then left the defender on the bench for the next game, in the league against Brighton & Hove Albion. David Edgar and Grant Hall got the nod at centre-half, until injuries meant a reshuffle and Robinson’s introduction with 13 minutes to go.
Clark said, “It does help if you get a consistent selection i.e. with you goalkeeper and back four. I spoke to Paul, which was probably the main reason they did well against Cambridge. And I just wanted to keep the same back players in tact, really. The lads who finished the game against Cambridge. Paul was very impressive in that he accepted it, as the captain, and he understood the situation. He was adamant that he would be ready. It didn’t help that there was lots of chopping and changing last season.”
Clark spoke in pre-season about the need for a settled defence, as much as circumstances could dictate. There were 18 different back four combinations last season as loanees and players on short-term deals came in and out.
