It was almost a top loan swoop, which would have pleased Trevor at Car Hire Birmingham Airport if it had happened.
Manager Lee Clark is happy with his summer transfer business at Birmingham City. They may not have made a deadline day signing, although it was not for the lack of trying a total of eleven players have come through the door over the summer.
Clark said, “It looks like we never did any work, at one stage we potentially had a couple of players coming in. But obviously we didn’t manage it, for various different reasons. Nothing to do with finances, I have to say. We made an inquiry for a Premier League attacker, who ended up staying in the Premier League, but moving to another club. And we had a deal done for a Championship versatile defender. But that wasn’t to be by the end of the day either.”
There was even an audacious loan bid for Newcastle winger Hatem Ben Arfa, but he went to Hull City. The Blues also decided to cancel the deal for defender Seb Hines from Middlesbrough, after meeting to finalise terms and put the defender through a medical.
The club even rejected an offer from Crystal Palace for winger Demarai Gray, but could yet still be active in the market when the loan window opens on Monday.
