Car Hire from Geneva International Airport (formally known as Cointrin) is 4km northwest from Geneva’s city centre, with immediate access of the motorway system along the Swiss-French border.
Geneva is a gateway to numerous ski resorts such as Morzine (47kms) and Chamonix (63kms) in France and Le Chable and Vebier (170km) in Switzerland. Morzine is the main resort in Portes du Soliel, with a wide selection of hotels chalets and apartments. There is nursery care available and ski school for children great for a family holiday, or the possibility of sledging. Snow cover permitting, the snow-lifts are open daily from December to April. The lifts are open in the summer mid June until mid September for walkers looking to explore the area and the beautiful panorama. Like Morzine, Chamonix is a popular ski resort, with a great choice of accommodation. ‘Apres ski ‘why not visit the Pastry room and enjoy a pastry treat, refreshing drink and take in the view. There is also a cinema and casino as well as many bars and night clubs on offer. Vebier in addition to excellent skiing and hotels has a sports centre with pool, saunas and a hot tubs, dog sledding between Les Ruinettes and La Chaux as well as some nice walks. Home to the Five Star d’Adrien (one Michelin star), and the after dinner bar is ‘Crock No name’ which is a cosmopolitan cocktail bar with a DJ playing into the early hours.
Hire a car and explore the city of Geneva, walk around the Geneva Lake front, some 450 feet in the air, on a clear day it is possible to see Mount Blanc. The lake is enhanced my flower beds with exotic flowers and wild life that live in and around it such as swans, ducks and diving birds. Drive to the beautiful Saint Peter’s Cathedral, climb the 57 steps that lead to the top of the tower to enjoy the panorama of the city and the lake. Geneva is famous for ‘The Geneva Time Exhibition’, the timepiece trade show exhibiting 55 world class brands such a ladiore Geneve, Laurent Ferrier, and Rebellion and Speake-Marin. The show is an opportunity for jewellers to view pre released stock. Exhibitions such as the Motor Show and International Jazz Festival are also great attractions for visitors to Geneva.
Geneva Airport began as a field with outbuildings in Coitrin, on the outskirts of Geneva. There was a small amount of air traffic that increased in the 1930’s. During World War two the Swiss authorities would not allow flights out of Switzerland, however increased the size of the runway in 1945 and the first terminal was built with funding by the authorities and in 1946 built the second terminal. There are plans for future expansion with the construction of pier c.
Geneva Airport (GVA) advises that if passengers have check-in online they will need to arrive one hour before departure. There are signs for car hire return; however it is always best to check with the supplying company for their return procedure. For those checking in on the day, there are check –in express facility available and passengers are advised to arrive two hours before departure. While waiting to board there is a wide selection of shops restaurants and amenities available, chocolate shops, duty free, fashion and souvenirs. There is banking and exchange facilities available, conference rooms, a business corner, post office, dry cleaning and even a hairdresser and meditation room.
