The Car Hire Edinburgh Airport team would love to see the biggest cycling event take place in their city in the near future.
With a deal of £225,000 to take two stages of the Tour of Britain 2015 cycling event, Edinburgh hope this will take the city closer to hosting a stage of the Tour de France.
The city’s Culture and Sport Committee will meet to discuss bringing the Tour of Britain and the Pearl Izumi Tour Series to Edinburgh. Committee members will be asked to agree funding over three years towards the delivery of two stages, which could see some of the sport’s biggest stars including Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish come to the city.
It is hoped the move could pave the way to hosting a stage of the world’s most famous bike race. City leaders have held a long-term desire to host the Grand Depart of the Tour de France, with Edinburgh narrowly losing out to Yorkshire this year.
The council will work with Tour of Britain organisers, Sweet Spot and EventScotland to identify a cycling route in the city – with the castle esplanade expected to feature prominently.
Councillor Steve Cardownie said “Edinburgh’s streets have staged many fantastic cycling events in recent years and we are always looking to welcome new events to the city. If the Tour of Britain should go ahead – and prove to be a success – I believe the council would be more than well equipped to bid with partners for part of the Tour de France.”
