This festival is one for the book lovers at Car Hire Edinburgh Airport who will get the chance to hear from some of the top authors in the world.
Some of the worlds leading authors and thinkers will be rubbing shoulders with fantasy writers, comedians, rock stars, broadcasters and actors when the Edinburgh International Book Festival gets under way this summer. Amongst the headline acts is Game of Thrones creator George R R Martin and Outlander author Diana Gabaldon.
The event will run from 9th to 25th August with other big name authors including Will Self, Amy Bloom and Jung Chang. The writer behind the War Horse phenomenon Michael Morpurgo, philosopher Alain de Botton has also been confirmed.
Festival director Nick Barley said “2014 is a big year for Scotland. There are a number of important events taking place, not least among them the independence referendum, but just as important as far as we’re concerned for our programme are the centenary of the outbreak of war in 1914 and the staging of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It’s not just about that changing sense of what Britain and Scotland are – regardless of the result of the referendum – but also Europe being under threat, the rise of extreme politics, the loss of trust in politics with the long-term declined in voter turn-out – these are big challenges facing the world.”
The UK’s poet laureate, Glasgow born Carol Ann Duffy will be at the festival, while the former US poet laureate Billy Collins will be one of the many special guests. Comedians who have confirmed include Dave Gorman, Mark Thomas, Omid Djalili and Phill Jupitus.
