Edinburgh Tram date set for first paying passengers

Car Hire Edinburgh Airport think there will be many people wanting to get a ticket and be part of the historic first tram journey which is taking place at the end of May.

The date has been announced as 31st May for the first paying passengers on the Edinburgh tram network. It will leave the Gyle shopping centre at 5am heading to the city centre.

The project has been considered controversial, carried out test runs in March using volunteers and has a line going from York Place to Edinburgh Airport.

Lesley Hinds, the transport convenor at City of Edinburgh Council, said “When I took over two years ago the tram project, and promised what I would try to do and strive to do was to have this tram project on the revised budget and on the revised timetable. We’re on budget and today’s announcement means the revised timetable – which was summer this year – and we’ve managed to bring it forward so that’s why I’m really pleased that we’ve managed that.”

Many residents will now be pleased that the construction phase is now over and feel a sense of relief. With Ms Hinds adding, “All I can say is that I over the last two years have taken this project by the scruff of the neck.”
