The Car Hire Luton Airport branch are pleased the long awaited section of road is finally complete, in time for the increased traffic over the summer months.
It has taken over forty years, but the inner ring road in Luton is finally complete and opened on 14th July. Officially opened by Transport Minister Baroness Kramer, the road links the junction of Old Bedford Road and Hucklesby Way to St Mary’s roundabout.
It will be opened to the public during the school holidays with Baroness Kramer saying, “If this has been designed 40 years ago, it would almost certainly have been a scheme that would have sliced through the town and would have destroyed the life of the town centre of Luton, so with modern approaches now to how we do town planning, this is going to support the town centre. It supports a lot of the other development, making it so much more attractive, helping keep retail here, bringing in jobs and employment opportunities, so it’s a fantastic project.”
Councillor Dave Taylor, from Luton council, said “Not only does this scheme provide additional vehicle capacity but it will also improve through-traffic from Guildford Street and make the town centre more attractive for pedestrians and cyclists. It delivers major benefits for Luton’s retail sector and greatly improves prospects for delivery of major regeneration projects including mixed-use developments at Power Court and High Town Village and extensions to The Mall shopping centre.”
