Car Hire Edinburgh Airport staff who are fans of the TV series would loved to have met the author who was in the city recently.

Game of Thrones author George R.R Martin has revealed to an audience at the Edinburgh International Book Festival that a visit to Hadrian’s Wall inspired a key component of his ground breaking series. He also joked that an independent Scotland should build a giant wall of ice along the border.

He said, “If Scotland does secede it should build a gigantic wall of ice. It would be a great tourist attraction as well as keeping the English out. I was inspired by people like Eleanor of Aquitine and not so much Joan of Arc,” he added, “but the queens of Scottish history, from Lady Macbeth on down; strong women who didn’t put on chain-mail bikinis to go forth into battle but exercised immense powers in other ways.”

George RR Martin also said that some strong female characters from A Song of Fire and Ice had been inspired by Scottish history.
