The Gatwick Airport branch of Easirent Car Hire felt the increase in passenger traffic during July with increased car hire bookings and the need to take on some extra temporary staff.
The highest ever monthly passenger numbers have been recorded at Gatwick Airport during July with just over 4 million passengers (4,057,400) passing through the airport, up six per cent on the same month last year. The previous best month was in August 2013.
The introduction of new services by Norwegian Air to New York, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale, have helped boost passenger traffic over July. Other long haul routes also saw growth, with Dubai particularly popular with a 6.7% increase in passenger numbers compared to last year.
Nick Dunn, chief financial officer at Gatwick Airport, said “The strength of Norwegian’s new low-cost long-haul flights is really encouraging. What passengers want is the convenience of flying from their local airport to the destination of their choice with fares they can afford.”
European flights also performed strongly with an extra 226,000 passengers compared to July last year. Business routes including Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam boosted numbers alongside leisure trips to cities including Stockholm and Rome. There was also a year-on-year uplift in traffic to Istanbul of 21.8 per cent.
