The Easirent Airport Car Hire branch near Gatwick Airport believe there is a serious chance the airport will be considered for expansion after the latest news.
The London Mayor’s plans for an island airport have fallen into serious doubts meaning Gatwick Airport is now believed to be seriously in the running for expansion.
The Airports Commission has rejected the plan for a new airport in the Thames estuary, suggesting it would cost up to £60 billion more than an additional runway elsewhere. Commission chairman Sir Howard Davis added the construction time and environmental concerns made the proposal un-viable.
Gatwick Airport Chief Executive Stewart Wingate said, “Gatwick had the strongest case and a second runway could be delivered quickly, at low cost and low risk.”
With the Boris Island four-runway dream over, this leaves three options for the Commission to consider – adding a third runway at Heathrow, lengthening an existing runway at Heathrow, and a new runway at Gatwick. The final decision will be made in summer 2015.
