Gatwick Express has announced that, due to improvement works by Network Rail, the service will not operate from Wednesday 25 December to Wednesday 1 January.
The loss of the fast train service between Gatwick Airport and London Victoria Station over the Christmas period will reduce train services to and from the airport and could force many air travellers to consider other transport options, such as driving to Gatwick.
The good news for those wishing to drive to Gatwick over Christmas is that the roads are much quieter than normal and, if booked in advance, air travellers should secure a great price on their airport parking.
For those driving to the airport, parking options at Gatwick include:
As the name suggests, short-stay parking is suitable for short stays, or for dropping off and collecting passengers, with the pricing geared accordingly – charges are made for the first 30 minutes, hourly up to 6 hours, then for stays of 6-12 hours, stays of 12-24 hours and daily thereafter. Conveniently, short-stay car parks are situated a short walk from the airport terminals however, this is usually the most expensive type of airport parking.
Park and ride
Park and ride offers a cheaper alternative to short-stay parking with customers required to drive to the airport car parks (most are off-airport, although Gatwick does have some long-stay on-airport car parks) park their cars and then travel to the airport on a shuttle bus.
Meet and greet parking
This is a very convenient type of airport parking as customers are able to drive right up to the airport terminal and don’t need to park their car themselves. They simply hand over their keys to an awaiting driver, who parks their car for them, leaving them free to walk into the airport terminal.
Anyone wishing to book Gatwick meet and greet parking should consider using a Gatwick Approved Operator.
In order to achieve approved operator status, meet and greet parking companies must only use ParkMark approved car parks and have attained Trading Standards’ Buy with Confidence award.
Park and stay packages
Anyone wishing to drive to Gatwick and stay in a Gatwick hotel the night before their flight should investigate a park and stay package. Park and stay packages offer hotel rooms with parking included and often work out cheaper than booking them separately. Most packages can include a choice of off-airport, on-airport and meet and greet parking.
