The staff at Car Hire Crawley hope for a successful end to a rather long search for a local resident.
There is help wanted for a man in Crawley in solving a 40-year picture mystery. For four decades Eric Saunders has been obsessing over the story of a painting by an eight-year old girl in 1935, which Mr Saunders saved from a pile of castaway items at the end of a jumble sale in 1974.
Since the discovery Eric has been trying sporadically to find out more about the young artist Pauline Bryce, but with no success until recently.
Eric said, “No one wanted it at the jumble sale. It’s a kids’ map really. You might recognise bits of Crawley Down if you know the place. It’s only a mystery to me. My wife isn’t particularly interested in such things. I kept it in the attic for years and a couple of years ago I decided to frame it. I offered it to the local school and to the health centre but they didn’t want it. I’ve just had it so many years that I need to find out why she painted it.”
It has been revealed to him recently that the owner of the painting had married and changed her surname, but those records are from 1953.
