If you plan on hiring a VW campervan in Scotland, or travelling up to Scotland as part of your campervan holiday, Edinburgh is one place well worth visiting with much to offer. Edinburgh is a must stop destination for many people visiting Scotland, and if you are on a road trip then it is a recommended detour.
The Summer is probably the best time to visit Edinburgh because of the variety of cultural festivals that take place – for example the up and coming 2016 Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, The Film festival, The Book Festival, and many other events as part of the whole ‘Edinburgh Festival’ umbrella.
Before the major cultural festivals begin for 2016, the Beltane Fire Festival is held each year on 30th April and is a wonderful procession of light and celebration, steeped in history. There is basically many great things to do in Edinburgh no matter what time of the year you visit, including fantastic West End shows at the Playhouse, and music concerts here as well as The Corn Exchange. Some major 2016 Edinburgh music attractions include Sham 69, Alexander Armstrong and Beverly Knight, while musical theatre dates include Jersey Boys and Annie.
The beauty about driving to Edinburgh in a hired VW campervan is that there are many less busy places just outwith the city that you can stay. Inner city hotels tend to be booked up and over priced during the summer, but the campervan gives you the freedom to stay anywhere, and there are many adequate camping sites to stay that are just minutes travelling distance from Edinburgh itself.
