This October, pick up your Easirent hire car from our Bootle city branch, and make the short drive to Liverpool city centre and this year’s Liverpool Sea Shanty Festival. The event takes place from 2 to 4 October 2015 and will showcase some of the most beautiful sea shanties as the performers return to the sea shanty’s spiritual home.
Liverpool is a city with a rich maritime heritage. Once one of the biggest and most important ports in the world, Liverpool was home to the world’s first commercial wet dock, which was built in 1715 and revolutionised the way that cargo was loaded and unloaded onto the ships in Liverpool’s docklands. Liverpool’s port also allowed the city to flourish over the centuries with a sharp population increase and an influx of different cultures into the Liverpool landscape, making the city the culturally diverse space that it is today. Sea shanties played an important part in Liverpool’s maritime history and the Liverpool Sea Shanty Festival is one big celebration of this.
Sea Shanties are a traditional work song that was used to accompany labour on board large merchant sailing vessels in the 1800’s.
Taking place over three days, visitors to Bootle and Liverpool can expect to see sea shanty performances from respected singers and musicians from all across the United Kingdom and Europe. Head over to Liverpool One, The Cavern Quarter the Albert Dock and Canning Dock to make sure you catch a performance.
