Gatwick Airport has responded to the government’s decision to delay the expansion of Heathrow Airport. Gatwick Airport, which is the United Kingdom’s second largest airport, is the most efficient single runway airport in the world. Calls for an expansion to Gatwick Airport over Heathrow Airport have been being voiced for a while as the airport serves over 200 destinations and sees more than 40 million passengers per year.
The Heathrow Airport expansion debate has been an ongoing problem over the past year. Currently, the area surrounding Heathrow Airport already breaches EU air quality legal limits, and it is feared by many that an additional third runway would only exacerbate the situation, as the millions of extra cars and lorry journeys that expansion would bring would make things worse.
With the government considering whether it would be more beneficial to expand either Gatwick Airport or Heathrow Airport, arguments have been made by Gatwick Airport representatives that an expansion at Gatwick Airport would better suit the UK’s aviation needs and would offer a greater economic boost.
Stewart Wingate, Gatwick Airport CEO sad:
“This is a defining moment in the expansion debate. There is now a clear choice facing Britain: growth with Gatwick or inertia at Heathrow with an illegal scheme that has failed time and time again.
“We have always maintained that this decision is about balancing the economy and the environment. Expansion at Gatwick would give the country the economic benefit it needs at a dramatically lower environmental cost.”
