What a great boost for schools in the area, with Zona from Car Hire Luton Airport hoping the schools make the most of the funding awarded.
A cash boost of nearly £500,000 is heading for primary schools in Luton during next year. It is part of the PE and Sports Premium, worth over £150 million across the country; it will mean fifty schools in the area will receive funds for additional gym teachers and new gym equipment.
A typical primary school of 250 pupils will receive a grant of £9,000, although schools with more will receive an increased amount. Research has shown that nine out of 10 schools have already improved the quality of their PE lessons as a result of the funding – and more than 90 per cent reported improvements in children’s health, behaviour and lifestyle.
The fund has been in place since 2013 and goes directly to the school’s head teachers, who decide whether to spend it on additional teaching staff or equipment.
On what the grants will do for the schools, a Luton Borough Council spokeswoman said “The PE and Sports Premium funding has been used in a number of ways to enable primary schools to improve PE lessons and encourage increased participation in sports. Schools have employed specialists to train class teachers to help them develop the knowledge, confidence and skills to deliver high quality PE lessons. This new funding allocation will give teachers an extra boost to further enhance existing physical education and sports in Luton’s schools.”
