The figures released for speeding have made the staff at Car Hire Manchester Airport point out to car rental customers of the requirement to stick to speed limits and if they are unsure, stick to 30 m.p.h.
There was an average of sixteen drivers in Manchester collecting a speeding fine every day last year.
There were 5,964 fines issued for going over the speed limit in the region in 2013. The figure is up 2.5 per cent on the 5,821 fines handed down in 2012 for speeding.
The peak for speeding fines in Greater Manchester was in 2011, when 8,319 fines were dished out for going over the speed limit. About one in 19 fines for speeding in England and Wales were in Greater Manchester last year.
The Metropolitan Police was the only police force in England to dish out more speeding penalties in 2013 than Greater Manchester.
Nationally there were 317 fines handed down every day on average last year for speeding offences in England and Wales, 115,549 in all. The figure has stayed relatively constant since 2010.
