Going to University: The Moving Van Guide

Whether you’re leaving a current house share, relocating to a new one, moving across the country or down the road into student accommodation, Easirent has the van for you!

It’s an exciting time, you’ve got your place at the University of your choosing (hopefully!) and you’ve found your perfect residence to spend the term living in. But how do you get there with all your things in one piece? You could ask mum and dad to squeeze all your things in the family car or… you could hire a medium-sized van for a small buck and do it the ‘easi’ way!

We know how scary it can feel to leave the comfort of home and make a start on your own place. Especially if you are moving across the country and away from mum and dad. You can make this easier though, by bringing all your most important things with you in one go. Your bed, clothes, pictures, ornaments, consoles, instruments, etc. Everything that’s important to you, that makes your room – your home. Instead of lugging all your personal items on a coach or train, you could hire your own personal removals van for the day – from as little as £20!

Things to Remember

  • Our young driver age limit is 23 years so make sure someone older can come with you to be designated driver for the day!
  • A valid GB driver’s licence held for at least 1 year.
  • You can hire from any of our 30+ branches across England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland, just use our handy branch finder.
  • We do small vans like the Citroen Berlingo, right up to large Luton vans with rear tail-lifts so you can choose whatever size fits your needs.
  • Check what your halls provide so that you don’t end up with two of everything! Some places will provide kitchen utensils and crockery so you won’t need to purchase a set. Some places don’t provide a mattress which means you’ll have to take yours with you – something to consider when choosing your size of van.

Don’t forget, if you have friends who are also moving, double-up with a larger van and split the cost! University van hire is usually low-cost but it doesn’t hurt to share the load with friends, especially if you are moving into the same address.

Here’s what one student had to say about their move to Cardiff University:

I live with my mum in Cardiff and got a place at Bristol University studying Finance. Mum only has a small car so I knew it wouldn’t be an option to fit all my suitcases and bedding in the back. We looked online and found Easirent on a comparison site offering a small van for £18 for the whole day. Mum used her credit card for the security deposit and we picked it up at the Cardiff branch near ours. I’d looked at some of the guides online and measured my biggest items to make sure they were going to fit. The team at Cardiff were so lovely, they could tell mum was nervous about driving something bigger than her little punto so they showed us all around, how to use the buttons, the radio, everything really! It was a brand new transit van with bluetooth for my music and a sat nav for finding our way. I’d honestly recommend doing it this way, it’s cheaper, easier and much more fun!
