Here is a bit of Background on one of the most famous New Year’s Eve festivals in the world, Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations can attract up to 150,000 people each year. Starting on 30th December, the excitement runs non stop right through to New Year’s Day.
Hogmanay is believed to have been brought to Scotland as early as the 8th and 9th centuries by the Vikings, they celebrated the shortest day or the winter solstice, with some serious partying.
Hogmanay celebration has always been a huge event in Scotland. I was surprised to learn that up until the 1950s, the people of Scotland would work over Christmas and then New Year was when they celebrated with their nearest & dearest. Some of the most spectacular firework displays can be seen across Scotland, with many other entertaining features such as bands , Shetland Vikings bearing firelit torches to name just a couple. The Edinburgh Festival is one of the most spectacular events to be experienced at some point in anyone’s life. Just remember, if you are travelling here to enjoy Hogmanay, Scotland observes another Bank Holiday on the 2nd January.
