Liverpool has a rich maritime history, and this weekend sees the celebration of 300 year anniversary of Liverpool’s Old Dock. Pick up your Easirent hire car from our Bootle depot and take the short drive to Liverpool city centre for a weekend of spectacular events, celebrating the world’s first enclosed commercial wet dock.
The Old Dock was constructed in 1715 by Thomas Steers, one of Britain’s leading canal engineers who converted the mouth of the Pool into a dock with a quayside and a river gate. This revolutionary move allowed ships to load and unload from the water’s edge and was praised by the iconic author Daniel Defo, who said that the Old Dock was of “such a great benefit that it’s not likely to be seen anywhere in England.”
Hidden for hundreds of years, the Old Dock was discovered during excavations of the docklands in 2001 and has been preserved by the Liverpool One developers as an important reminder of Liverpool’s historic status.
Guests to the weekend of celebrations can expect a whole host of free events in the Liverpool Maritime Museum. The Maritime Museum is based in the historic Albert Dock, Europe’s largest collection of Grade I listed buildings and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The celebrations take place from 27 to 31 August 2015 from 10:00 – 17:00 each day.
