There is a sadness around some of the Car Hire Birmingham Airport office after the news of two of the club’s better players will be leaving in the summer.
It has been revealed that Chris Burke and Nikola Zigic will be leaving Birmingham City at the end of the season on Bosman free transfers, despite both being offered new terms. Due to budget restrictions because of the club’s financial problems, no contract of more than £5,000 a week can be offered. Burke has received numerous offers from other clubs, but Zigic has not responded to the Blues terms.
Manager Lee Clark said, “It has reported we have been in negotiations with Chris Burke and Nikola Zigic. We have offered them both deals. Chris has obviously got numerous amounts of offers, which will just blow ours away. It is very, very doubtful that Chris will come back. I actually spoke to him on Monday morning and I fully understand where he is coming from. He’s 30, still at a good age, and it is a good opportunity for him as a player what you call a really big contract. Nikola hasn’t accepted our offer; he hasn’t been in touch, so we will be looking for a replacement for him.
Burke joined the Blues on a Bosman from Cardiff in 2011 and has been an influencial player on the right of midfield, while Zigic was a high profile £6 million signing from Valencia in 2010. Due to lack of communication over Zigic, Clark has had to seek alternatives with Wes Thomas set to sign from Rotherham and potentially Clayton Donaldson from Brentford who is also out of contract.
