The debate around whether the tram service being built in Edinburgh is going to be a success will continue right up to the time it is open to public service. The Car Hire Edinburgh Airport branch take a look at the pricing structure that has recently been announced.
The prices for the Edinburgh tram service within the city centre will be the same as the price of a bus ticket, the local council have confirmed. It will be £1.50 for a single adult journey and 70p for a child. Although passengers wanting to travel from Ingliston or Edinburgh Airport to Gogarburn will pay £2.50 and for a child it will be £1.50. An airport return will be £7.50 or a child £4, with drivers being able to take the tram from Ingliston park and ride for £2.50.
Lesley Hinds, Edinburgh City Council’s transport convener, said: “The tram will offer a fast, comfortable, convenient and reliable transport option at a very good price. With Lothian Buses, we’ve ensured that the bus and tram ticketing systems are fully integrated for ease of use and to keep costs low. Like most cities there’s an airport supplement and this is part of the business model to ensure the service is cost effective in operation.”
The tram service is set to be up and running two months ahead of time in May 2014, with a short part of the line used for testing in October, with a full route batch of testing taking place in December. The project is still within the revised budget of £776 million which was approved by the council in 2011.
