Tuesday 17th of November 2015
Every December the model village of Saltaire, within the borders of the City of Bradford District comes alive, literally, as they put on the fantastic show of a living advent calendar. From 1st until 24th of December Saltaire is buzzing with festivity and brings in many guests to follow the trail and look for the special windows.
From 1st until 24th December a new window is added and the treasure hunting trail begins to find that next window. It’s a family friendly attraction and gives you a chance to explore the village as you search for that special window. It is an event which has been running from 2006 and each special window offers up a classic advent scene.
The fun is all in the secrecy as no one except the organisers know what’s behind the special window until it’s revealed and the village’s artistic community plays a role in creating each of the windows. Many have a traditional advent theme whilst others are simply wintry creations or may be a reflection of a topical event. The windows are ‘opened’ each evening throughout December and even online everything is coordinated so those who can’t attend can watch the windows open via social media.
Saltaire Tourist Office provides a map of where the windows are located and for 2015 they have added a new feature, the opportunity to buy Christmas cards featuring the designs of previous years.
Saltaire is easily reached by anyone who wants to see their famous window openings in person and it’s just to the west of Bradford city centre, around 20-25 minutes’ drive in your Easirent hire car from the airport.
