London is one of the top tourist destinations for international visitors and it’s easy to see why. With stunning architecture and a celebrated history, London is one of the world’s greatest cities. Here at Easirent we have picked out some of our top tourist attractions for you to enjoy.
1. Tower of London
The Tower of London was founded by William the Conqueror after the Norman Conquest in 1066 and is an imposing figure on London’s skyline. A symbol of oppression, the tower has played an important role in British history and was used as a prison during the 15th – 17th centuries.
2. London Eye
Park up your Easirent hire car and take to the skies on the London Eye. Also known as the Millennium Wheel, the 135 metre high Ferris wheel is one of the most visited tourist attractions in London. Make sure to get there early to avoid the queues and experience a breathtaking panoramic view across London.
3. Palace of Westminster
More commonly known as the Houses of Parliament, the Palace of Westminster has been home to the Parliament of England since the thirteenth century. Leave your Easirent hire car at the hotel and take a guided tour of the House of Commons, where some of the most important parliamentary decisions in the UK take place.
4. Buckingham Palace
Visit the Queen’s official London residence; of course it’s highly unlikely you’ll meet Her Majesty while you’re there, but you can still take a tour around the stunning state rooms that are open to the public for at least 60 days during August and September.
5. Tower Bridge
Take advantage of your Easirent hire car, and go for a drive across the iconic Tower Bridge, a suspension bridge across the River Thames. Construction of the bridge began in 1887 and was officially opened to the public in 1894 by the Prince and Princess of Wales.
6. Big Ben
Big Ben is synonymous with London; the magnificent clock tower is part of the Palace of Westminster and was officially renamed ‘Elizabeth Tower’ in 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. The tower is home to the second largest four-facing chiming clock in the world.
7. Westminster Abbey
A short stroll from the Palace of Westminster you’ll find the striking, gothic Westminster Abbey, one of the most prominent religious buildings in the country. Immerse yourself in British history and visit the marital place of Royalty, including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Queen Elizabeth II herself.
8. St Paul’s Cathedral
Hop in your Easirent hire car and drive to the stunning St Paul’s Cathedral, an Anglican Cathedral that sits on the highest point in the city of London. One of the most iconic figures on the London skyline, St Paul’s Cathedral was damaged in 1666 during the Great Fire of London and again during The Blitz.
9. Shakespeare’s Globe
Shakespeare’s Globe is a reconstruction of the Globe Theatre which was destroyed by a fire in 1613. The original Globe Theatre was built in 1599 by Shakespeare’s touring company the Lord Chamberlain’s Men on the Southbank of the River Thames. Park up your Easirent hire car and become a ‘groundling’ for the evening, and experience a play as they would have done in the Elizabethan times.
10. London Zoo
Take a short drive in your Easirent hire car to Regent’s Park, the home of London Zoo, the world’s oldest scientific zoo. Opened to the public in 1828, the zoo houses over 800 different species of animals.
