Yorkshire is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the whole of the United Kingdom, and also some of the most impressive stately homes. Pick up your Easirent hire car and explore some of Britain’s finest houses – take it their rich history and decide whether you’d be upstairs or downstairs. Here at Easirent we have picked out some of our favourites just to make your decision a little simpler… Enjoy!
1. Ripley Castle
Home to the Ingilby family for 26 generations, Ripley Castle is a 700 year castle steeped in history and set amongst stunning grounds, lakes and walled gardens. Located in Harrogate, just a 15 mile drive from our Easirent pick up point at Leeds Bradford Airport, Ripley Castle invites guests on an amusing and informative tour through the lives and loves of its family members. Explore the old tower, which dates from 1555 and houses armour, panelling, books and a priest’s secret hiding place.
2. Castle Howard
Described as one of England’s most beautiful houses, Castle Howard was designed by Sir John Vanbrugh in the 18th century and sits amongst the stunning Howardian Hills. Located a 45 mile drive from our Easirent pick up point at Leeds Bradford Airport, Castle Howard’s interior is dramatic and home to world-renowned art collections. Take a walk around the stunning rose garden and the ornamental vegetable garden.
3. Harewood House
Rich with heritage and culture, Harewood House is located in Leeds, not far from our Easirent depot at Leeds Bradford Airport. Named as one of the Treasure Houses of England, the stunning Georgian property is nestled amongst landscapes that were designed by Capability Brown. Step inside the house and take a walk through the exquisite state rooms, and you can even dress up as a servant downstairs. There are plenty of things to keep the kids entertained as well, with an adventure playground, penguins, flamingos and parrots to keep them busy.
4. Newby Hall and Gardens
Another one of England’s finest houses, Newby Hall is a beautiful house with perfectly preserved 18th century interiors. The house which was built in the 1690s is today the family home of Mr and Mrs Richard Compton who have kept the houses contents in place, including rare Gobelin Tapestries and some of the finest Chippendale furniture. Newby Hall and Gardens is famous for its double herbaceous borders and compartmented gardens including a rose garden and a water garden.
5. Cannon Hall Museum
Located in Barnsley, less than an hour’s drive from our Easirent depot at Leeds Bradford Airport, Cannon Hall Museum is an idyllic, beautiful home set amongst perfectly landscaped gardens. Take the kids along and discover Fairyland, a tranquil hideaway built in the 1870s featuring arches and pillars set amongst the ruins of local churches. Inside Cannon Hall Museum, there is an extensive collection of paintings, metalwork, ceramics and furniture.
