No matter what time of year you’re visiting the capital, London is always abuzz with events to keep the whole family entertained. Pick up your Easirent hire car from our London Gatwick Airport depot and head to one of our top events when you’re next in the city.
1. Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race
Taking place every April, the Oxford and Cambridge boat race is one of the biggest events on the London calendar, with thousands of spectators lining the banks of the River Thames to catch a glimpse of the famous competing university teams. Since it began in 1856, the Oxford University Boat Club has challenged the Cambridge University Boat Club to a four mile race along London’s famous river. Park up your Easirent hire car and head to one of the many vantage points along the route, with Putney Bridge, Bishops Park and Putney Embankment being prime locations to see the race.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and is held annually for a fortnight each June. Take a drive to the All England Club, which has held the tournament each year since 1877 and join in the excitement as thousands of spectators pour into the grounds to watch some of the best games of tennis in the world. Find the perfect spot on Henman Hill and cheer on your favourite players – if you’re very lucky then you might even be able to get a ticket to centre court.
3. The Proms
If you’re heading to London in the summer, then a trip to The Proms is a must. Dust off your dinner jacket and head to the Royal Albert Hall between July and September for an evening of spectacular orchestral concerts. Over 92 concerts take place during The Proms and there is room for 900 standing visitors.
4. Notting Hill Carnival
Leave your Easirent hire car at the hotel and head to the annual Notting Hill Carnival, which takes places across the August Bank Holiday weekend. An event that is penned in all Londoners diaries months in advance, the Notting Hill Carnival is a must see while you’re in London. The Caribbean inspired street festival began in the 19th century as a way of showcasing the Caribbean culture to the population of London and it has grown in strength every year since. Fun for all the family, there will be entertainment, food stalls, drinks stands and of course the famous carnival.
5. London Fashion Week
London is famous for being one of the most influential fashion capitals in the world, and the London Fashion Week is a yearly celebration of its stylish status. Taking place during ‘fashion month’ in September, London Fashion Week showcases the London style to over 5000 visitors and designers from around the world. Although tickets to the runway shows are unavailable to the public, there are plenty of free fashion showcases during the week that are worth a visit.
6. London Film Festival
Like London Fashion Week, the London Film Festival is the highlight of London’s film calendar and is when the brightest stars of the screen come out to play. Held annually during the second half of October, the London Film Festival showcases over 300 films and shorts and there is an abundance of other activities to get involved in, including Q&As with film makers and actors and plenty of workshops.
