Perfectly situated on the outskirts of London, Heathrow Airport is the perfect place to start your adventure around the capital. Pick up your Easirent hire car from our London Heathrow Airport depot and take a drive to see some of the city’s most iconic historic buildings. Here at Easirent, we have picked out some of our favourites to make your decision a little easier… Enjoy!
1. The Tower of London
The Tower of London was constructed in 1066 after the Norman Conquest by William the Conqueror, and is probably one of the most recognisable buildings in London. If walls could talk, then these would have many secrets to reveal; housed inside the Tower of London are documents that date back over 800 years, detailing the history of the British Royal Family through the ages. The Tower of London has contained many notorious prisoners and politicians over the years, including members of the royal family themselves. Anne Boleyn was famously held inside the Tower’s walls in the weeks leading up to her execution for treason. Seen as a formidable symbol of repression, the Tower of London is home to the oldest exhibition in the world, ‘The Line of Kings.’ Park up your Easirent hire car and journey back in time as you pass through the Tower’s ‘traitor’s gate’ and pay a visit to the Crown Jewels.
2. Westminster Abbey
Probably the most famous religious building in the United Kingdom, Westminster Abbey is in fact a ‘Royal Peculiar’ and not a cathedral or even an abbey, as many people are led to believe. Westminster Abbey is solely responsible to the sovereign, and therefore has hosted many royal events, most notably Prince William and Kate Middleton’s wedding in 2011. The UNESCO protected Gothic abbey has been a Coronation church since the 11th Century.
3. Windsor Castle
Windsor Castle is the Royal residence in the county of Berkshire and is located less than an eight mile drive in your Easirent hire car from our London Heathrow Airport pick up point. Notable for its beautiful architecture, which is Motte and Bailey style, Windsor Castle was constructed in the 11th Century for William the Conqueror after the Norman Conquest of England.
4. Hampton Court Palace
Located in the beautiful Richmond upon Thames, Hampton Court Palace is only a short 10 mile drive in your Easirent hire car from our London Heathrow Airport depot. One of the only two surviving homes of King Henry VIII (the other being St. James’ Palace) Hampton Court Palace is one of the biggest tourist attractions located just outside of London.
5. Eltham Palace
Hop in your Easirent hire car and head to Eltham Palace, a Royal Residence located in the heart of Greenwich, which is famed for its internal Art Deco design. Once the location for many Tudor Christmas Celebrations, the palace soon went into disrepair until the 1930’s, when the current palace was rebuilt upon the foundations of the old one. Visitors hoping to see some of the old features of the original house are in luck, as the 15th Century bridge still passes over the palace moat.
6. Benjamin Franklin House
The Benjamin Franklin House is a terraced house in the centre of London’s Georgian Quarter. As the name would suggest, this is the former home of Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the United States of America. Built around 1730, and still possessing most of its original features, this Grade I listed building is a hit with tourists from around the world.
