London’s West End contains some of the biggest tourist attractions in the city, mainly the plethora of theatres that are dotted along Shaftesbury Avenue and beyond which showcase some of the best theatrical talent from around the world. With so many shows to choose from, here at Easirent we have picked out some of the best musicals in the city. So get your singing voices at the ready, and have a brilliant evening.
1. Les Miserables
Probably the most famous musical on the planet, Les Miserables follows the story of convict Jean Valjean, on his journey to redemption and revolution. Originally released in native French, and following the story of the French Revolution in the late 18th century, Les Miserables was the brainchild of Boubil and Schonberg, who wanted to bring Victor Hugo’s tale to the masses in the form of musical theatre. Nowadays, Cameron Mackintosh’s legendary production is a global sensation and has been shown in 42 countries worldwide. Les Miserables is on at The Queen’s Theatre and ticket prices start from as little as £29.
2. The Lion King
The award-winning Lion King is the best selling show in London’s West End. Taking up residency in The Lyceum Theatre, this smash-hit musical follows the story of Simba the lion cub, as he tries to avenge his father’s death. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the story is set in the Serengeti Plains and has a spectacular soundtrack, which is provided by Elton John.
3. The Phantom of the Opera
Taking up residency in Her Majesty’s Theatre, The Phantom of the Opera follows the story of the elusive Phantom, who terrorises a Parisian opera house in order to make his protoge Chrstine, the leading lady. Tickets for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s epic musical start from just £27 and can be booked online until March 2016.
Based on Gregory Maguire’s novel, Wicked tells the untold story of the witches of Oz, and how one of them became known as the Wicked Witch of the West. This award winning musical is currently running at the Apollo Theatre and tickets can be booked online from £20 per ticket.
5. Billy Elliot: The Musical
This critically acclaimed musical follows the story of Billy Elliot, a young working-class boy from a small mining village in the North of England who falls in love with ballet dancing and strives to prove his doubters wrong. This hugely successful musical is on at the Victoria Palace Theatre.
6. The Book of Mormon
The brainchild of Trey Parker and Matt Stone who famously created South Park, The Book of Mormon follows the plight of a pair of missionaries who have travelled to a dangerous part of Uganda with the hope of converting the residents to Mormonism. The Book of Mormon has won nine Tony Awards including Best Musical and is on at the Prince of Wales Theatre.
