1. Gawthorpe Hall
Take advantage of your Easirent hire car and head to Gawthorpe Hall, just a 12 mile drive from Blackburn town centre. Located in the heart of indusrial Lancashire, Gawthorpe Hall is an Elizabethan gem which was built between 1600 and 1605 and was the family seat of the Shuttleworth family for over 300 years. Inside the stately home you will find over 20 paintings which are on loan from the National Portrait Gallery, mainly detailing the English Civil War.
2. Hoghton Tower
Hoghton Tower is less than a 20 minute drive in your Easirent hire car from our Blackburn pick up point and is set amongst magnificent grounds. The ancestral home of the de Hoghton family, Hoghton Tower was built in 1595 and is a beautiful example of an Elizabethan fortified manor house. Take a guided tour around the state rooms, which have been perfectly preserved over the centuries, and take in the history of the house. Children will love the underground passages and dungeons as well as the impressive dolls house collection.
3. Towneley Hall Art Gallery and Museum
Located just a 30 minute drive away from our Easirent pick up point in Blackburn town centre, Towneley Hall Art Gallery and Museum was the home of the Towneley family for over 500 years, until 1901 when the house was sold to the Burnley Collection. The house was opened up t the public in 1902 and today is home to myriad exhibitions, including themes of Egyptology, Textiles, Decorative Art and Regional Furniture.
4. Samlesbury Hall
The fascinating Samlesbury Hall is steeping in history and its stunning black and white exterior is one of the main draws of visitors to the hall. Built in 1325, Samlesbury Hall has had a plethora of families calling it home and is thought to be haunted by Lady Dorothy Southworth. Located in between Preston and Blackburn, Samlesbury Hall is nestled amidst stunning grounds which are home to plenty of different species of local wildlife. The hall is open all year round and admssion is free, so it’s definitely worth a visit.
5. Stonyhurt College
Stonyhurst College is one of the largest buildings in the north west of England and its located in CLitheroe, Lancashire. Built in the 1500s, Stonyhurst College is today home to a Catholic co-educational boarding and day school. Open to the public at weekends, visitors can take guided tours of the library, chapel, school rooms and historical apartments. There is plenty of parking on site, you you needn’t worry about parking your Easirent hire car while you explore the stunning grounds.
