1. Belgrave Music Hall and Canteen
One of the newer venues in Leeds and it is becoming known for its versatile and open approach to drawing in live acts. It isn’t all about the music here as they also host everything from yoga conventions to extravagant food feasts but the most popular thing offered is there regular live music slots and festivals. It’s in the heart of Leeds’ Northern Quarter and it destined for great things, with many up and coming artists using it as a platform for bigger things.
2. Topic Folk Club
The Topic is one of Bradford’s premium music venues and in fact, one of the best in the whole of Yorkshire, as it just picked up the Best Music Club Award at the Yorkshire Gig Guide Awards. The Topic Folk Club is based at Glyde House, in the centre of Bradford, which you can reach with ease in your Easirent hire car from the airport. The club offers weekly sessions where you can listen to and get involved in playing the latest folk music and related discussion.
Known as a smart and stylish cocktail bar for the most part, Leeds’ Smokestack also doubles up as a popular music venue for anyone with a taste for all things jazz, funk and reggae. Live funk is offered on a weekly basis and there are other special events spread out throughout the year.
4. Brudenell Social Club
Conveniently in the Hyde Park area of Leeds, Brudenell Social Club is known for its role in hosting secret gigs for now huge name bands including Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand. It has a member’s club element but is also a regular gig venue and its function room regularly invites large crowds as well as smaller, more intimate events. It is a vital centre in the Leeds art and music community. Upcoming events include The Mountain Goats, Los Campesinos and They Might Be Giants, as well as other recognisable indie names.
5. O2 Academy Leeds
Leeds O2 Academy is based in the old Town and Country Club and it is a go-to venue for the bigger name bands who want to play in Leeds but aren’t fans of the arena scene. It regularly hosts musicians found in the charts so visitors to Leeds may come into the city specifically for their favourite band. Upcoming gigs at the Academy include Happy Mondays, The Vaccines, Kaiser Chiefs and Massive Attack.
6. Al’s Dime Bar
Opened in 2013 in the heart of Bradford City Centre, Al’s Dime Bar specialises in live rock music and received the Outstanding Small Music Venue award at the Yorkshire Gig Guide Awards. As well as live bands Al’s also hosts acoustic sessions and jam session evenings so everybody who wants to have a go can get involved. It has a modern American theme and brings in plenty of people from outside of Bradford to enjoy its atmosphere.
7. First Direct Arena
The big venue in the area, the First Direct Arena offers a classic arena experience and when opened, it really changed the music scene in Leeds and brought in many more big ticket, super popular acts. The calendar of the First Direct Arena has a real focus on rock and roll, with the biggest names in the industry including Eric Clapton and Pearl Jam opting to stop off their on recent tours. In 2015/16 music fans can get excited for gigs from Paul Weller, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Il Divo and many more.
