It could be considered an odd way to stop the trams, but Car Hire Edinburgh Airport think safety must come first and no further problems arise from a situation like the one yesterday.
Balloons became tangled in the overhead wires forcing the Edinburgh tram line to be cut short. It meant the service was only running between Murrayfield and Edinburgh Airport for two hours yesterday.
There was the fear the balloons would damage pantographs, which connect the carriages to the wires. Passengers wanting to travel further were able to use their tickets on the Lothian Bus services.
A spokeswoman for Transport for Edinburgh said “We were alerted to an object on the overhead line which could have been a potential obstruction. As a precaution we decided to isolate power and remove it to ensure there was no damage caused to the pantograph. These are still the early days of a new service as such we decided to use caution in our approach. We have been accepting tram tickets on our bus network until the full route can be re-instated.”
