United Airlines has launched the first ever direct flight to the USA from the North East of England.
The brand new service, the only one of its kind in the North East, will fly passengers nonstop from Newcastle International Airport to Newark Liberty International Airport in New York City. The flights will be operating five times a week (westbound) until September 7th 2015.
Bob Schumacher, United Airline’s Managing Director Sales – U.K and Ireland, and David Laws, Chief Executive of Newcastle International Airport, took part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Newcastle Airport to celebrate the inauguration of the service. They were joined by Councillor Ian Graham, Sheriff of the City of Newcastle, and Councillor Iain Malcom, Leader of South Tyneside Council.
Commenting on the occasion, David Laws said, “This is a very proud moment. Today’s inaugural flight to New York is the culmination of many years of work by the team at Newcastle Airport. This has the potential to be a game changing route, and a significant milestone for both the airport and the region.”
The route will encourage inbound tourism from North America and grow the region’s economy. Passengers can depart from Newcastle daily, with the exception of Wednesday and Thursday, and journey seven hours 50 minutes to New York City. The outbound flights are conveniently timed to connect at Newark Liberty International Airport with an extensive range of services to destinations across the Americas. Eastbound flights will take seven hours 10 minutes, and passengers arriving from New York can pick up an Easirent rental car at Newcastle International Airport and discover all that the North East has to offer at their own pace.
