Ribchester is an old Roman town, with evidence of Bronze Age beginnings, situated in the Ribble Valley district of Lancashire and lies on the banks of the River Ribble.

The area is well known for its Roman heritage. It was the site of a Roman cavalry fort called Bremetennacum, which was oriinally built in AD72/73 by the 20th legion. The village of Ribchester has two annual event days. The first of these is the village’s ‘Field Day’ which takes place on the third weekend in June. The day consists of a parade of decorated floats through the village to the, led by the local brass band. The parade finishes at the playing fields at the side of the village where marques and stalls provide entertainment for the villagers and visitors. Street parties then take place throughout the village shutting off many off the streets so the villagers and visitors can enjoy the festivities.

The second annual event which takes place in Ribchester is the ‘May Day Market’ which takes place on the last Monday in May. The village clubs, churches and charitable organisations set up and manage stalls as a means of raising funds for their activities through the year.

The village is also popular with walking enthusiasts. With links to well-known walks such as the Tolkein Trail, which takes you around Stoneyhurst College where J R Tolkein was inspired by the local scenery and wrote his famous ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy.
