Heading to the shipbuilding capital of Scotland this summer? Pick up your Easirent hire car from our Glasgow city branch and take a trip to visit the barque Glenlee, which is currently moored in Glasgow City Centre.
Constructed in the 1890’s and used as a bulk cargo carrier in 1896, the Glenlee circumnavigated the globe four times and was one of the most important ships to come out of Glasgow. Built at Bay Yard in the Port of Glasgow, the Glenlee was one of 10 steel sailing vessels constructed by the Glasgow shipping firm Archibald Stirling and Co. Today it is one of only five left in the world, and is the only one left in the United Kingdom.
Take the whole family along to visit the Glenlee, which is now an independent museum which offers a programme of maritime themed events, talks, school visit, tours, activities and costumed volunteer days. There are plenty of activities to keep even the youngest of guests entertained, including a mini cinema, an under five’s play area in the ship’s cargo hold, an exciting mouse hunt and you will even get the chance to ask your questions to members of the ship’s crew.
Take a stroll around the Glenlee’s recently refurbished captain’s cabin, and pick up an audio guide on the way around to learn about all of the secrets of the ship. On board you will also find a gift shop and a coffee shop.
