Winter Walks in the Dublin Mountains

Are you looking to escape the hustle and bustle of Dublin’s city centre streets at the height of the Christmas shopping period. Then swap your Easirent hire car for your hiking boots and head out into the rolling countryside of Ireland. Flanked by beautiful landscapes, Dublin is the perfect starting point for any intrepid explorer wanting to escape this Christmast time. Pick up a Easirent Dublin Airport from our Ireland branch and head to the hills for a day of quiet reflection in the country’s emerald hills.

Along the Dublin Mountains Way you’ll find plenty of routes for walkers of any capability, ranging from easy paths to more difficult.

Take the Shankill route, which is a 6km walk perfect for the easy-moderate ability hiker. Starting in Shankill vllage the route passes through Rathmichael wood, Carrickgollgan Wood and the peaceful Barnaslingan Woods – here you will find the ‘scalp’ viewing point, which offers stunning views across Dublin.

The Tinnock route takes between 2-2.5 hours and is for walkers of a moderate to difficult ability. Passing through Cathy’s Green, walkers will find themselves in a stunning forest of Japanese Lurch trees and Sitka Spruces. Climb the Three Rock Mountain and pass through the Fairy Ruins which offer a breathtaking view across the city below.

And Finally, if you’re a hardened walker then maybe you’d prefer to take the Hellfire route – a difficult three hour hike up one of Dublin’s most notorious mountains. Your reward for reaching the top? A drink in the Hellfire Pub, a pulic house built in 1725 and shrouded in mystery, though locals allege that the pub was used for satanic rituals and sacrifices to the devil.
